“This executive order is intended to scare people into not using any kind of public benefits program,” said Lynn Cowles, health and food justice programs manager at Every Texan, which advocates for better health care in Texas. “It's pretty classic anti-immigrant rhetoric that will not lead to any new understandings from data collected by (Texas) Health and Human Services.”
“This is a power play by the state leaders to take control of cities and become the de facto mayors and city councils,” Luis Figueroa, the chief of legislative affairs at the progressive policy group Every Texan, told me. If cities want to regulate in a whole range of areas, Figueroa said, cities “will now have to go to the legislature and ask permission.”
The pay gap widens, however, as women age, Posson said. Women over 34, whether they have children or not, are penalized for motherhood whereas men receive a premium for fatherhood.
“This has to do with societal factors and gender discrimination norms that women aren’t going to be as productive in the workplace because they’re parents now,” Posson said.
