Flora Brewer, a spirit worth celebrating

One of the marks of remarkable people is the company they keep. When we look to the family, friends, colleagues, and others who spent time with Flora Brewer, this is no exception. While the Every Texan team is sad to share the news of Flora’s passing, we wish to celebrate her remarkable spirit and the transformational things she did to make Texas the best place to live for every Texan.

Those who loved, knew, and worked with Flora speak of someone who would be present and supportive in good times and bad. In the words of an Every Texan board member, “Flora believed every human matters.” She moved people — and that’s not just wordplay.

Flora worked with civic and community leaders to bring long-term, sustainable housing solutions to Texas. Her diligence and innovation led to the creation of the Palm Tree Apartments in Fort Worth, giving a home to 24 previously unhoused families. Now a thriving complex, the road is paved for hundreds of new housing units for people across Fort Worth. A true example for other cities in Texas and beyond.

At Every Texan, we knew Flora in many ways, none the least through her leadership with our board of directors. She began her service with us in 2004, chairing the board for a time and fearlessly leading our work to boost the quality of life for all Texans. The roots run even deeper, as a grant from the Paulos Foundation — founded by Flora’s father, James John Paulos — helped furnish Every Texan’s office, allowing our team to do our best work.

One of our proudest moments was uplifting Flora’s life and work last month as one of the honorees at our Legacy celebration. (Watch some of the sentiments we shared here.)

“In the relatively short time I had the privilege of knowing Flora, we forged a truly meaningful connection,” shared Every Texan CEO, Marisa Bono. “Her unwavering dedication to our mission, coupled with her warm spirit, made a lasting impact on me and our organization. I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to work alongside, learn from, and laugh with such a remarkable woman.”

The Every Texan team, board, and our partners throughout Texas are grateful for Flora’s care, compassion, and courage. We extend our deepest condolences to her family and friends as they navigate this immeasurable loss.
